The reason that this called the scream in my opinion is that he sees the apocalypse and that he feels that his impending doom is upon himself and there is nothing he could do about it he going to die. Also he starts to feel the pain of every death and suffering that will or has already come to pass he feels everyones pain and sorrow and it envelopes him in infinite darkness.
